The second in a series of four wonderful articles titled "Finding Family" that highlights transracial and transcultural adoption from The Chicago Daily Herald, is titled “A First Year Filled with Love and Mystery”.
Like the last article, this one hits home in many ways, no matter where you have adopted from. This article tells the story of a couple who adopted an 11 month old from China, and follows them through some of her challenges during her first year home.
The little girl is diagnosed with some unexpected health challenges,... more
The Chicago Daily Herald has a wonderful four-part series online titled “Finding Family- Stories of Adopted Suburban Immigrants”.
The articles are extremely well written and have lots of wonderful photos to accompany them. I enjoyed these articles because they went deeper than most of the “look at this family that adopted” articles do and touch on some of the struggles and challenges in transracial and transcultural adoption. I am going to write about all four of them because each one focuses on a different aspect of transracial adoption and are very good reads.
Also, make sure you check out the adoption... more
The September issue of Rainbowkids online magazine is now up, and as always, there is a great selection of articles. My favorite this month is titled “Finding the Balance in Adoption” and is written by Susan Soon Keum Cox. This is a fantastic article on transracial adoption.
If you haven’t heard of Susan Soon Keum Cox before, here is here bio from the bottom of the article…
"Susan, adopted from Korea in 1956, is the Vice President for Public Policy and External Affairs at Holt International Children’s Services, the world’s largest adoption agency. As... more
Yesterday a Seattle newspaper had an interesting “quiz” about international adoption. It was written by columnist Joyce Brothers. If you’re not familiar with her, Dr. Joyce Brothers is a family psychologist and advice columnist (who is now a spry 78 years old).
Yesterdays’ article is titled “International Adoption is not for Everyone” and in it, Dr. Joyce Brothers gives some basic information on the possible psychological aspects of international adoption. The information is given in a “quiz” format, where she makes a statement and you guess true or false, and then the answers and additional information is given... more
Today there was yet another article on transracial adoption in the media. This one was in the Chicago Tribune. I've cut and paste the entire text of the article because the website makes you register to read it, which is a pain in the you know what. :)
I know one of the families personally in this article and even delivered their gift package and photo album to little Safia when we were in Addis in February.
I think this article is better done than most. I love that they point out that Ethiopian adoptions were happening and becoming more popular BEFORE Angelina. Enjoy the read.
Out of Ethiopia As more white Americans embrace African adoptions, experts... more
Here is yet another article on transracial adoption. This one comes from the New York Times. The article is titled “Overcoming Adoption’s Racial Barriers”.
While the article focuses on private domestic adoptions and adoptions from the U.S. foster care system, there is a lot of good information.
The article touches on how the views of adoption professionals and the public in general have softened in regards to transracial adoption, becoming much more tolerant and accepting of interracial families formed by adoption than they were even just... more
Here is a great article on transracial adoption and the overwhelming need for more intercountry adoptions from Africa.
The news release is from Brigham Young University and is titled, “Crisis calls for a radical increase in international adoption of African orphans, BYU study finds”.
The article focuses on the work of Jini Roby, an associate professor at BYU, an international authority on intercountry adoption and a transracial adult adoptee.
While Roby’s earlier work found that the African traditions of extended family, kin and communities taking in and caring for orphaned children was meeting... more
I found a great article the other day on adoption.com titled “Interracial Families”. I liked this article because it does not sugar coat the issues involved with transracial adoption, and yet it is still an uplifting and positive article.
The author discusses getting her first “awkward comments in public” with her new daughter, who was black. She writes, “Parents who adopt transracially cannot ignore that, by doing so, they become a minority family, subject to criticism, odd... more
The next article in the series on Transracial Adoption on Adoption.com deals with the things that parents should do once their children are home and how to help your child to “become a stable, happy, healthy individual with a strong sense of racial or cultural identity.” Isn't that what we all want? You can find this article here.
The article presents seven parenting techniques that all adoptive parents, especially those of transracial families, should follow. The articles states, “The seven parenting techniques listed below were compiled from books and articles on adoption and by interviewing experts in transracial and transcultural adoption.... more
Most of life’s big events involve planning and preparation. Weddings and marriage, buying a home, giving birth to a child, etc. all require a decent amount of preparation, and adoption is no different.
If you are adopting transracially, there is an even greater importance of preparing for your adoption. Adoption.com has a great article on their website titled "Prepare for a Transracial Adoption".
This article is great if you are just starting out on your adoption journey, and is also a great “refresher” if your child or children are already... more
