Adoption documentary

I don't have a lot of time to post this morning, as we are headed out to the big city for a doctor appointment (for Marcus actually...the kid has life-threatening allergies).

I documented my day yesterday for "A Day in the Life of Me" posts that I will get up tomorrow. :)

But before we go out the door, I wanted to share with you the link to Deca Productions.

Early on in our adoption process for Belane last year, we agreed to participate in a documentary that was being filmed about adopting kids that are HIV+. We spoke to the crew quite a bit, and when they traveled to Ethiopia in the summer last year, they got film of Belane, AHOPE and the other children.

They were at our airport and documented Belane's arrival to the US and meeting the rest of our family, and they followed us home and got some film of Belane's first shell-shocked-early-days home (and my completely exhausted and jet-lagged early days home!)

The name of the documentary is "We Are Still Here", and although it isn't complete yet, you can see the trailer here. If you look under "Reel" you can also see some of the Chances by Choice fundraising video.

The project was "pitched" to Oprah back after the holidays, but since they haven't heard anything back yet, it is now being pitched to HBO next week.

It is really exciting to me that these kids are having someone pay attention to them and tell their story, and draw attention to them. It is one thing to hear about "millions of orphaned children in Africa" but it is different to look into their faces.

I also hope that by sharing our story, and the wonderful other families that share their stories in this documentary, will help dispell some myths about HIV, make people realize that adoption is possible for these kids, and possibly even help a few decide that maybe it is something right for their family.

So, enjoy the link. In case you don't know, I am the one with the chin-length straight hair. Belane is hard to miss.

Let me know what you think!

I can't wait to see the full documentary. We were so fortunate that Margaret Fleming of Chances by Choice was staying at the AAI guesthouse the same week we were there last November. She is an incredible, wonderful, woman. Just like you! :)

Hi Erin,

I have been reading your blog for over a year, and I thought it was about time I introduced myself! My name is Stefanie and I live in Ireland (I believe you have Irish connections!). I hope to adopt children in the future, and so I have been researching adoption. I have dreams of a very large, transracial family, and I hope to adopt waiting children, so you can imagine my delight when I discovered your blog! Your wonderful family is such an inspiration to me, and your blog is both entertaining and informative! I thank you for taking the time to share with all of us readers.
The documentary looks great, though my computer froze and won't let me watch the clip! I don't know if it'll be broadcast over here, but if it is, I'll be watching!
