So for treating her dry, dry scalp, first we tried a product by Motions called
“Hair and Scalp Daily Moisturizing Hairdressing”. The scent was average…not too strong, and I didn’t love it but didn’t hate it (I am very picky about smells!!!) Her hair felt average when we used this, but her scalp was dry and flakey and not looking good at all. I gave it a few days and her scalp kept getting worse, so it was on to something else.
For my older girls I have really liked
Africa’s Best Ultimate Herbal Oil…it keeps their braids from drying out and makes their very dry hair nice and soft. It has a pleasant “baby powder-ish” scent, which is not overbearing. It is only about $3 for an 8 oz bottle, so the price is right too. The oil did make Belane’s scalp pretty happy, however her hair was an oily mess. She would leave “oil marks” on everything and it was so slick that I no longer enjoyed playing with her hair, because my hands would be all oily afterwards (and this happened even when I used a small amount… her hair just isn’t dry enough to absorb the oil I guess).
I kept looking….
Next a friend of mine with several Haitian children recommended a product line (that had come highly recommended to her) that I had never heard of, called
Miss Jessies. The two products that were recommended to me were the “Curly Pudding”, a curl crème, and the “Baby Buttercreme”, a hydrating hairdress. I love that the website promotes natural hairstyling and there is lots of great styling info on the site that I enjoyed too.
The products were pricey ($38 for the Curly Pudding and $58 for the Baby Buttercreme…ikes!) BUT, I bought them when they were having a buy one get one free sale, so I got twice as much for the price. Also, the containers are BIG, and the product goes a long way, so it is a decent value. (The containers are 16 oz).
I wasn’t crazy about the Curly Pudding. The smell was overbearing to me (fruity), and while it did give her very defined curls, it didn’t do a thing for her scalp. My older girls love it though, and it works great on braids, twists, etc. I won’t order it again, but am letting the girls finish what I bought. (For what it is worth, this company had excellent customer service).
The Baby Buttercreme has a divine scent…I can’t even really explain it, but I love it. It is not greasy like the oil, and absorbs quickly. Her hair felt a little “stiff” once dried, but a quick comb or a few drops of water and a fast rub with a towel softened it right up. It does have shea butter, cocoa butter and a few other good things in it, but it does also have mineral oil and petroleum in it, which a lot of people don’t think should be put in your hair.
This product was one of my favorites…her scalp still got a bit flakey by the end of the day, but it was much better than with the others. Like I said, I love the smell, and it was nice on the hair (a tiny bit on the stiff side…great for braids, not perfect for natural down styles). I also have to say that I have not found a better product than the Baby Buttercreme for my older girls. It makes their braids inches longer and we have never had braids stay in so well and look so “fresh and new” for so long. The scent is also good for boys and girls…it is not flowery or girlie at all (I’ve been rubbing a little into Marcus’s head too). I will order this again, but only if I find it on a 2 for 1 sale again. $58 is way too much for my budget for one thing of hair crème.
