Can you believe it’s March??? The days are just whirring by around here! (and it certainly does not feel like March, on account of the fact that we have gotten about six inches of snow this week).
Let’s see…adoption news….
I am sure you have heard this, but Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt (well, technically just Angelina since they are not married) are adopting another child…this time from Vietnam.
There are stories all over the web…
This one on VietNamNet Bridge has a nice picture (sans Maddox).
Some articles state that Angelina and Brad want a child in the three to four year age range. I think it would be nice (if they are prepared to parent a child adopted at that age) to see a celebrity adopt a child other than a cute little baby.
This would be the fourth child for Angelina…she already has a five year old son Maddox who was adopted from Cambodia, a two year old daughter Zahara who was adopted from Ethiopia and a baby daughter Shiloh, who was born to her in May, 2006.
Vu Duc Long, the director of Vietnam’s International Adoption Agency has been quoted as saying that Angelina Jolie filed papers to adopt a child this week, and that she is doing so as a single parent. I have also seen him quoted as saying that she will be treated as any other American adopting from Vietnam, and that the agency in the US that she was using was not being named (for now).
Can you imagine being that adoption agency worker...getting the phone call, "hi, this is Angelina Jolie...I'd like to use your agency to adopt a child." :)
Rumors and photos placed the couple in Vietnam at Thanksgiving last year, visiting Tam Binh, a well-known orphanage in Ho Chi Minh City, the capital of Vietnam.
Personally, I think it’s great. We’ve done adoptions close together, we’ve adopted children close in age, we’ve adopted out of birth order and we’ve adopted from several different countries, so I have no objections to any of that. As I’ve said before, I don’t have any reason to think that Angelina is any less qualified than anyone else to adopt, and everything I have seen and heard from her has showed her to be very culturally aware and dedicated to her children and where they are from. And I hope that Angelina becomes as invested and committed to the children of Vietnam as she has to the children of Cambodia and Ethiopia.
I have to say that as much as I dread the "back lash" of having to tell everyone when we are adopting again and dealing with everyone's reactions, concerns, opinions, etc. I can only imagine what it is like for Angelina when she makes an announcement like this. The whole world gets to have an opinion about it.
Here are a few other posts I have written on the world’s most famous transracial adoptive family (and they buzz they have created in the media).
