Another late funny

Yesterday was one of those crazy busy days and I was having trouble thinking of something funny, and then something funny happened. So forgive me for another “Wednesday funny” on Thursday.

This week and next week our Wednesdays are very busy. I try hard not to over-schedule our kids, and typically keep their after school activities to Tae Kwon Do and girl scouts/boy scouts. But we started soccer in the summer (which we have really, really enjoyed), and that overlaps two weeks with the beginning of Tae Kwon Do… hence the two busy weeks.

So yesterday, the bigger kids took the school bus right to Tae Kwon Do for their class, I picked them up and we drove out to the soccer field, the little girls played their game while the big kids got changed into their soccer uniforms, the 5-7 year olds played their game, we all sat in the van for a 20 minute rain break, and then it was time for my 8-10 year olds to play (which is also the team I coach).

We decided that instead of having all the kids wait out in the cold, damp weather while my team played, Josh would run them up the road to Burger King and let them eat and play indoors, and then pick us up with food for us when our game was over (which also worked well because our game didn’t get done until 7, and we are trying to get the kids to bed by 8 every night since school has started).

The funny thing happened at Burger King. Josh goes into BK with six of our 10 kids. Three were playing soccer with me, and Belane is still in Ethiopia (but she counts!). Josh had two of our African American kids, Ben from Ethiopia, two Asian kids and one of our biological sons. Just about everyone in our small town either knows us, or has at least seen us around enough that we aren’t anything new anymore.

Apparently a teenaged boy sat down by Mercy (who was sitting next to Josh) and started asking questions about the family…who was adopted, where from, how old, etc. Josh said Mercades really handled it all well…the boy wasn’t being rude and it was a pleasant conversation.

Then as he stood up to leave he looked at Mercy with a sad look and said, “Well, I just wanted to say how sorry I am.” To which Mercy said, “Huh? What are you sorry for?” and the boy said, “That things didn’t work out with your parents.” At that point Josh spit his soda and Mercy started laughing.

“My mom is just up at the school coaching soccer,” she said. “Trust me, things are working just fine between them. They kiss all the time.”

I guess the kid was pretty embarrassed…he said he’d never seen our family not all together and just “assumed.”

I haven’t been able to resist the urge to look at Josh a few times since then and say, “It’s just too bad things didn’t work out between us.”
