My kids are being good and I am on a roll so here is one more great article for your reading pleasure...
This one is from the Adoption.com magazine, which I adore. This article is called "
Blending the Color of Families through Adoption: A Questioning Look at Some of the Fears, Phobias and Fallacies," and it is written by Rita Jenkins, who is an African-German adult adoptee. The article gives tons of Jenkins' personal insights on adoption, race, etc.
Jenkins definitely has a different "tone" to her writing than a lot of other adoption authors, and I am interested to hear what you think. She definitely does not strive to be "PC" (politically correct) and sometimes comes off a bit... hmmm... what's the word I am looking for?? Maybe...abrasive? But at the same time she is very laid back and open and informative. She sounds like she'd be a wonderful person to have a conversation with about all this stuff.
Jenkins shares her personal story and the second half of the article is a long "question and answer" session where she gives personal and in-depth answers to popular questions that would be asked of an adult adoptee.
She has a definite sense of humor and sarcasm (which I appreciate being a political advisor's daughter from NY!) and her story is definitely a "happy ending", which I know many of us adoptive parents of children of another race LOVE and long to hear.
The entire article is worth reading for many reasons, but my favorite part is this quote from Jenkins, "Fears, phobias and fallacies should never cloud one’s decision to adopt a child. Children almost always grow into individuals whose personalities, values and tendencies are based on the parenting they receive and the environments they grow up in. Adopting a child doesn’t change that. Adopting a child who is different simply changes that child and your family from ordinary to extraordinary."
How great is that?? Thanks to Rita for her openness and frankness, and her support of parents adopting transracially.
Happy reading!
