Back to School

School is right around the corner in our house. My kids go back later this week, and there is an air of excitement surrounding all of the new shoes, clothes, backpacks, pencils, crayons, etc.

I have several friends who live in other places whose kids also start public school this week, and I have quite a few homeschooling friends who have officially started their school year as well.

Summer went by fast! On one hand I am grateful, because fall means Belane’s homecoming (hopefully!). We did not go on any huge vacations or do anything overly exciting, but we had a lot of fun doing our favorite sort of things… picnic dinners, hikes, swimming at the lake, visiting friends, playing at the park, riding bikes, staying up late, having company, and those sorts of things.

During the school year we run on a pretty “set” schedule, so it was nice to be a bit lax this summer too, and sleep in when we wanted, eat when we wanted, etc.

Contrary to popular belief, I am not one of those moms who is jumping up and down and all excited when the kids go back to school. I have people look at me all the time this time of the year and say things like, “I bet YOU love back to school.” Actually, I really enjoy having my kids home with me during the summer.

But back to school is exciting too. The kids are excited and looking forward to a new school year. This year we’ll have a sixth grader, a fifth grader, two third graders, two first graders, two preschoolers and two toddlers home with mom (once Belane is here).

I thought that with so many families going back to school right around now, whether public school, homeschool or another option, that I would talk a bit about adoption and school, and how adoption might factor into making schooling decisions for your child.

To be continued…
