If you are still considering what to buy for your children this holiday season, another great gift idea is something "cultural". All of our adopted children are very proud of where they are from and love to get things that represent where they were born and/or their birth culture.
There are oodles of websites out there that sell cultural items for internationally adopted children. Here are a few ideas I really like and please feel free to leave a comment with your own suggestion.
Princess Designs - You can get several different styles of shirts that let girls show their cultural pride. We have sweatshirts that say, "This is What a Vietnamese Princess Looks Like", "This is What a Korean Princess Looks Like" and "This is What an Ethiopian Princess Looks Like". My girls LOVE these sweatshirts and wear them all the time.
Asia For Kids - Asia For Kids is a website and a print catalog that is full of wonderful stuff for Asian kids. There are books, games, dolls, shirts, videos and all sorts of great items for Asian kids. Maggie and Amanda both read this catalog over and over when it comes.
Adoptionshop.com - Adoptionshop has books, dolls, CD's, scrapbooks, videos and all sorts of wonderful products for adopted children. If you go to
this page, you can shop by "country".
Culture For Kids - Culture For Kids is a partner of Asia For Kids and has cultural items for kids from all over the world.
Amharic for Kids- This site has some really great products for kids from Ethiopia. They have books, bean bag sets and other items to help kids learn (or retain) the Amharic language. Ben and Belane love their bean bags and books from Amharic for Kids.
Tapestry Books - This is an online adoption book shop that has a wonderful selection of adoption related and cultural products.
Benefit Orphans - This shop is run by Adoption Advocates International and sells items from Ethiopia and Ghana, with proceeds benefiting humanitarian projects in Ethiopia, Ghana, China and Thailand.
Culture on the Web - This is a wonderful resource that I found online at Adoptive Families Magazine. They have lists of cultural resources for adoptive families organized by country and/or continent. I found some wonderful new products and gift ideas from this one!
Happy shopping! :)
