Earlier this month I wrote about our adventures in finding the right hair products for Belane. Belane has beautiful “corkscrew” curls…much looser than the hair of my black kids from the U.S. (who also have beautiful hair), and yet still much more textured than your average “curly hair”. Making things extra difficult was the fact that Belane has suffered from a severely dry scalp since we got her in Ethiopia. Products that made her hair feel nice left her scalp itchy and scratchy, and products that made her scalp look healthy, left her hair greasy and oily.
We had been doing pretty well with the “Hair Balm” from
Carol’s Daughter, but I was still keeping my eyes open for new products to try and searching for the perfect products for her hair.
When I wrote about my trials and errors with products in the hair adventures posts (
part one here,
part two here and
part three here) I got lots of comments, and several product recommendations.
I am grateful to everyone who recommended products, but I have to give a HUGE thank-you to “Sunmamma”, who recommended the
Blended-Cutie line of products. This is a line of hair care products for children with a range of hair textures.
I checked out the website and instantly noticed that the Silky Swirls Shampoo and Tug Me Not Conditioner claimed to be ph balanced “for tender scalps”. I ordered one of each, along with the Butter Me Up conditioning cream and the Satin Style Detangler.
Well, I am in love. First off, this is the first child’s hair care product that I can honestly say I love the scent of. It is a really nice “almond-y” scent, not too strong at all, and not too girly, so it would also be fine for boys. All of the products have the same scent, so they all work well together scent-wise.
We have been using the shampoo and conditioner for over a week and Belane’s scalp looks better than it ever has, and the Butter Me Up is just wonderful stuff. It leaves her curls very defined, but very soft, and not the tiniest bit oily or greasy.
Belane’s hair really doesn’t get tangled…it is always easy to get a comb through it, however it does get “matted down” when she sleeps, and the Satin Style Detangler works wonders after nap time. I just spray it on a few times and fluff it up with my fingers and she is good to go.
The website has lots of great info and they also have “Blended Beauty” products for older people. They have a page that I found really helpful, that lists different hair “types” (and has pictures) and then recommends products for adults and children with that hair type.
So THANK YOU Sunmamma, and if anyone of you out there are still searching for just the right stuff, this line might be worth a try. It is definitely what I will be getting for Belane for a while now.
