If you are new to the world of adoption or recently started researching/considering adoption as a way to expand your family, one of the first things you will realize if you haven’t already, is that adoption is expensive.

I remember about five years and a half years ago when I first started to research adoption. My husband and I had three biological sons and could not have any more children, and I desperately wanted more children, especially a daughter. I found a website about adoption, a light bulb went off in my head and things snowballed from there. (Insert laughter here). That first night at the computer as I was researching adoption I went through a range of emotions. I started off really excited and hopeful. That moved on to a bit overwhelmed when I started to realize how much information and choices and decisions and issues there were surrounding the concept of adoption. Then I moved on to completely disheartened when I realized what an adoption would actually cost.

Josh and I were a young couple with a minimal income and no large sums of money sitting in the bank. We already had a decent amount of debt and while I knew we could afford to parent another child, I was pretty dang sure that there was no way we could afford to adopt one.

I guess it is a good thing that I am persistent and not the type of person to give up on something just because it may not be easy. I found a website with information on ways to pay for an adoption, and at the top of the page there was a quote that said, “Remember, where there is a will, there is a way.” I held on to that in my mind and my heart and sure enough, we found a way.

In fact we have now found “a way” quite a few times. I have lots of people email me and ask me questions regarding adoption and our family, and “how on earth have you been able to afford to adopt so many times?” is one we get a lot.

So I decided to start a “How to fund your adoption” category, and I am going to provide resources for loans, grants, fundraising and other ideas to help raise the money necessary for an adoption. There are many, many websites providing information on paying for an adoption, and I will give info and feedback on what options are out there and what has and has not worked based on my personal experience and that of my friends.

Whether you are on your first adoption or trying to find a way to come up with the “dough” to pay for another, I hope I have some ideas and resources to help you.

Remember, where this is a will, there is a way.

And if you have any ideas that have worked well for funding your adoption, feel free to email me at transracialadoptblog@adoptionmail.com and let me know.
