More tips on moving your adoption along quickly

Here are some more tips on getting your adoption process to move along as quickly as possible.

- Use Fedex or something similar to send important documents. This way you can use tracking number to verify that packages were received, instead of having to check in with your agency every time you send them something. (And, it is faster to use Fedex or something similar than it is to use regular mail).

- Make color copies of everything and keep yourself a set. If something is lost or needs to be redone, it is so much easier to have that accomplished if you already have a color copy.

- Be professional. Every time we send paperwork to our agency, to immigration, to the Secretary of State office or where, I enclose a cover letter with our names, address, phone number and the date, and then state what is enclosed, and what is required (if anything).

- Think ahead. When you are gathering the paperwork for your homestudy, try to find out what is needed for your dossier. One trip to the doctor for both rounds of "medical letters" is a lot easier and time efficient than making two trips. If you're going to need a passport, you need to start early. Know what you are going to need.

- Be pleasantly persistent. Do not call the agency constantly, however once your dossier is sent or your referral acceptance papers or anything else important, it is good practice to follow up with an email a week or so later (if you do not hear from them first).

- Be organized. Keep your adoption papers in one spot, like a huge folder or file cabinet, so they can be easily found when needed.

- Keep a time line. I have found it very useful to keep a sheet of paper that says what I did on what day. It is really easy to forget when you sent something off, or when you requested something, etc. and keeping a time line is a great way to keep track of everything.
