For parents adopting African or African-American children, unless you are adopting a baby who is completely bald, hair care is going to be an issue you have to deal with right away.
Finding the right hair products for your child often involves a lot of trial and error. You can read about some of our trials and errors with products in my hair adventures posts (
part one here,
part two here and
part three here).
We have found several products and lines of products that we like along the way. We have liked the
Blended Cutie line of products. We have also had success with
Miss Jessie's Baby Buttercreme, although it is super expensive. Another line of hair products we have used and liked is the
Jamaican Mango and Lime products.
With all of those products, I have complaints though. The Blended Cutie stuff, although it works well and smells divine, seems to really build up on Belane's hair, even with pretty frequent washings. Miss Jessie's really holds her curls, but despite saying on the bottle that it doesn't harden the hair, Belane's hair looks good but feels really "crunchy" with that stuff (and the price definitely keeps me from ordering). And while I like the Jamaican Mango and Lime products, Belane hates the smell of them, and they leave a lot of residue in the bath tub (weird!)
We have a new line of products that we love, and I am saying so after using them for two months straight. Both Belane and I love
Curly Q's for Kids. We use the Curlie Cutie Cleansing Creme, the Coconut Dream Conditioner, the Moist Curls Moisturizer/Detangler and the Curly Q Milkshake.
The shampoo and conditioner are very rich and I can easily run a comb through Belane's hair after using these. The Moist Curls is the first spray product that I have used and really like, and the Curly Q Milkshake does a great job of defining her curls and taming the frizz, without making her hair hard or crunchy.
This is the first line of products that leave her hair soft with defined curls, and it is the first line of products we have used that I feel leave her hair looking as good on days that we don't wash her hair, as it does on the days that we do wash her hair.
Oh, and I asked Belane what she likes about it, and she said she loves that it smells "like cake" and she LOVES the prince and princess that look like her on the bottles.
For those of you worried about scents, the shampoo and conditioner have the strongest scents but they do not last and linger in an overpowering way whatsoever and it is a nice scent...kind of like coconut icing. The Moist Curls has very little scent, and the same is true for the Curly Q Milkshake. The Curly Q Custard, which we also tried, has a stronger smell (like the shampoo) which we would have been fine with, but we found that product to be a little bit too much for Belane's hair, and the "Milkshake" is much better on her hair.
The scent is fine for girls and boys, and I have been using these on Marcus as well. Also, the price is good and I can honestly say that a little goes a long way. I will definitely be packing some of this stuff up when we go to get our Solomon.
