Wednesday is more than half over and I still need to get a "Wednesday funny" up today.
Here is one that a lot of you parents of transracial families will appreciate.
One day back in spring of 2004 when Marcus was still a new little baby, Josh and I were at the park with our kids (who at that point were our three biological sons, Nathan, Ryan and Shane, Maggie from Vietnam and Amanda from Korea. Mercy and Des came just a few months later).
Anyway, I was sitting on a bench in the shade with baby Marcus while Josh ran around the playground with the other five kids. A woman who was at the park with two little boys came over and sat down next to me. She eyed Marcus, and then looked up at me, and then back at Marcus. I tried to ignore her, and watched Josh and the kids play.
Finally she asked if I was babysitting, and I politely said, "no". She could not seem to let it go...a moment later she asked, "so that is your baby?" to which I of course said, "Yes, he is my baby." A moment or two of awkward silence later she looked over at Josh and the kids and said, "Is that you husband?" and I assured her that he was. I kept waiting for the lightbulb to go in her head that we had adopted, but it just wasn't working out that way.
She looked at the kids and said, "Are all those kids out there yours?" and I told her that yes, the three boys and two little girls playing with my husband were all our children.
I busied myself cooing at Marcus and just wishing the woman would go play with her kids, but after another moment or two she exclaimed, "Gosh, I guess you just never know what's hiding in your genes."
IKES!
