Ok, this this week's funny really doesn't have anything to do with adoption, but it definitely has something to do with parenting, and I think it's pretty dang funny!
I have one brother and one sister. When we were young and my parents were still together, we often spent Saturdays or Sundays at my granparents' house (my Dad's parents). When I was about eight years old or so, (and my sister was six and my brother was four) my brother went through a phase where he would just eat himself sick every time we went to my grandparents' house.
My Grandma always cooked alot...big meals, big desserts and snacks out inbetween. There was always lots of people around, and us kids just sort of ran around and played and ate what we wanted. Moderation is not something that a four year old boy is very good at.
I remember a few weeks in a row that my brother Mark ate so much that he would moan and grown all the way home about how sick he was. Each week my parents thought he would learn his lesson and not eat so much, but the next time it was always the same. We got used to listening to him whine about a belly ache on the drive home.
One week we were driving home, and I can't remember if it was the fourth of July or New Year's or what, but we had pulled over and were sitting in the car, watching some fireworks.
Mark was doing his usual, "I don't feel so good...my stomach hurts...I ate too much...I feel sick" routine and everyone was sick of hearing it! My sister and I were in the back seat of the car and Mark was up front in between my parents.
Finally my mom looked at Mark and said (jokingly!!!), "If you have to throw up, do it on your father."
And then my dear sweet little brother said, "Ok", and he turned and barfed all over my Dad.
Can't blame a kid for doing what he was told...(unless of course you are my Dad...sorry Dad.)
After that, Mark had his food intake monitored a wee bit more closely. :)
Lesson to be learned...kids take you literally, so make sure you really want them to do what you tell them. :)
